He was known as one of the world's foremost authorities on ''Phytophthora''. ==Early life== Zentmyer was born in North Platte, Nebraska to Mary Elizabeth Strahorn and George Aubrey Zentmyer, Sr.〔 While an undergraduate at University of California, Los Angeles Zentmyer was a sportswriter for the ''Bruin''. He went on to graduate work at University of California, Berkeley.
